Business Units
VPAC provides professional R&D services in the application of Advanced Computing in the fields of Computational Engineering, Computational Software Development, Geospatial Sciences, Grid Computing and Life Sciences. To support these fields, VPAC has formed a number of specialised support teams, as follows:
Systems
The VPAC HPC facility is managed by an expert team of software engineers and system administrators, called the Systems Group. The Systems Group provides high-level support to the HPC facility to ensure VPAC follows the industry's best practices and our stakeholders and clients receive the maximum benefit from VPAC's facilities.
Centre for Computational Prototyping
The Centre for Computational Prototyping is a professional group of specialist engineers and technology experts that are focused on developing advanced product development processes and methods, including Virtual Integrated Design Environments, as a method of assisting clients in maintaining innovation and remaining at the forefront of engineering advancements.
Computational Software Development
The Computational Software Development team at VPAC applies advanced computing to model and solve large-scale problems of scientific and real-world interest, with a particular focus on the field of geodynamics.
Grid Computing
The APAC Grid project is an Australia-wide project that aims to establish an efficient working Grid servicing Australian Researchers and international collaborators. VPAC is a leading player in this major project, and is responsible for delivering the Compute Infrastructure component. This project is initially concentrating on academic users but will ultimately offer massive advantages to all technical computing users around the country. The APAC Grid will provide seamless infrastructure to link computing facilities at APAC Members sites to provide researchers with seamless access to compute capacity, storage and related systems without needing to be aware of the underlying software and hardware linking grid resources.
Life Sciences
The VPAC Life Sciences team focuses on the three key research areas of Bioinformatics, Medical Informatics and Drug Discovery. The group works to assist the diffusion of advanced research tools and technologies throughout the Australian Life Science community by hosting the VPAC BioPlatform, a collection of the world's leading life science research software tools and act as a powerhouse of skills and technologies consulting academic, commercial and industry groups.
Geospatial Sciences
The Geospatial Sciences group delivers high performance computing solutions to the agribusiness, environmental, emergency services and police sectors and focuses on areas including remote sensing, geomatics, environmental earth sciences and statistical and scientific data analysis.
Business and Communications
The Business and Communications team supports and assists all VPAC’s Business Units by providing a wide range of essential administrative and financial services. These include corporate governance, marketing, finance and accounting, tax, risk management, human resources and payroll, OH&S, Quality Assurance and administrative support.
